LIMA, Peru, September 10, 2009 – Defending
champions Brazil relied on hermetic blocking to
defeat Dominican Republic in straight sets
25-18, 25-18, 25-18 in the second day of action
of the II Final Four Women’s Volleyball Cup at
Eduardo Dibos Coliseum.
Fernanda Rodrigues led three Brazilian players
in double digits with 16 points while Joyce
Silva and Adenizia Silva charted 13 and 12
respectively. Annerys Vargas topped the
Dominican side with 12 points and Milagros
Cabral added 8.
“Our team played with good level of
concentration and could execute all the
strategies,” said Paulo Barros, the coach of
Brazil. “Our blocking was consistent during the
whole match, not only to finish plays but also
to keep the ball in play for our second options.”
“Not many things to mention,” said Marcos Kwiek,
the coach of Dominican Republic. “It was a bad
game for our team. We made many errors and
failed on the important plays. Now we need to
take this game out of our heads and keep working
for the next contests. In this tournament, the
most important match is the semi final.”
“I agree with our coach. This was not our best
match but our reception was better than
yesterday, Brazil blocked well and we didn’t
have the concentration we showed against Peru,”
said Milagros Cabral, the captain of Dominican
Republic.
